Buying and Collecting Art

1. Only buy art because you love it! You may be hoping to buy a piece of art that will one day be worth a fortune. But no one can predict the future. No appraiser can tell you who is going to be famous. If you can’t stop looking at it, if it stirs emotions within you, if it makes you happy, then those are good reasons to buy it.

2. Before you buy, you should consider some things. First, the kind of mood or style you make should fit your lifestyle. Consider each room individually. What is the room used for? Parties, entertaining, a quiet get away, a play area, a library or reading area or office space? What kind of style are you going for? Modern, traditional, romantic, country, casual.? You should also decide on the color scheme of the room prior to buying your painting or you could just decorate the room around the painting, if you love it enough!!!

3. Make searching for art fun! Enjoy the process. It is a journey of discovery and there are so many new sights along the way. Don’t be stuck to just one style either. You may be surprised at what you’ll like if you keep an open mind.

4. There are many avenues for buying art such as art auctions, galleries,
Online galleries, artist’s associations,and online artist’s websites.

5. Buying from the artist directly is probably more advantageous than going through an art dealer. You are able to have contact with the actual creator of your paintings. You remove the middle guy (who can charge commissions of 50-60%) and therefore, you generally get a better price. It makes both parties happier especially when you let the artist personally know how much you enjoy their art.

6. How do you know if the artwork is original or not? Reproductions and prints are nice to collect, but if you want an original then you should know some of the terminology. If the description uses words like, reproduction, print, Iris print, giclee, Serigraph, offset lithograph, hand touched, hand embellished or canvas transfer, then it.s not an original painting.

Displaying Your Art

1. Your art is an extension of who you are because it reveals what you love. Remember that you are trying to personalize your home with this art.

2. Position artwork at .eye level. So that it is viewed with ease and more readily captures the passersby’s attention.

3. Cover two thirds of the space above furniture with one or more pieces of art to achieve proper proportion.

4. If you want to place artwork above a sofa, it should be placed about 6-9 inches above it.

5. You might want to try displaying artwork on an easel in a corner, bookcase or desk.

6. Pictures help absorb noise and remove the empty sound.

7. Artwork helps create the ambience of a room. You can change the look and feel of a room by hanging pictures in particular ways and places.

8. You can lengthen a room by adding paintings/pictures with horizontal lines. This creates an illusion of a longer room.

9. You can enlarge a narrow room by hanging a large colorful painting on one side and adding a mirror to the adjacent wall.

10. You can heighten a room by adding a painting with strong vertical lines.

11. If a room in your house feels kind of .blah you’d be surprised at how much of an impact displaying some vibrant art paintings can make. It almost seems to add .personality to the room!

12. Deciding where to hang the paintings will depend on the type of look that you want to create. For instance, if you want to create a modern gallery style, give each painting lots of space around it and even add picture lighting or track lighting to direct more attention to the painting and give the room more of an intimate glow. By placing lighting on the painting, it will also bring out highlights of the painting that you may not have noticed before, as well as bring out the inner glow of some fine art.

13. Art created with ink, pencil, charcoal, watercolors or pastels should be framed with glass or Plexiglas. You should always use a mat board between the art and the frame. Acrylic paintings are more durable and do not need to be framed. In fact, you should not cover oil or acrylic paintings with glass, as they need to .breathe..

14. Never hang paintings in direct sunlight or near heating vents or under fluorescent lighting. All of these can damage artwork over time.

Proper Care of Artwork

1. Always use great care when handling artwork. You should not touch the
surface with your bare hands since the oils, acids and salts on your skin can be transferred to the surface and cause damage.

2. When storing, place acid-free paper between each item. Do not use cardboard because it is highly acidic and can damage the art over time. The artwork should be kept flat, not rolled up in a tube any length of time.

3. Do not leave artwork in high temperatures or in your car for long periods of time. If shipped in a tube, remove it ASAP and lay it flat.

4. To clean acrylic and oil paintings, simply dust frequently to remove build up. Another effective method of cleaning is to blow across the surface with compressed air. You should not ever spray commercial cleaners onto the surface of artwork.

5. Acrylics are extremely durable and their life may be greater than all other artist’s materials. Acrylic colors retain their original brilliance longer than traditional oil paint and they are not as sensitive to UV radiation as
Watercolors.
